Many of the Beretta 92 models used by police agencies have been replaced by pistol designs that are more compact and more advanced. That has created a tremendous opportunity for civilian shooters who are looking for a reliable, economical, full-sized 9mm because as those surplus police guns have entered the used-gun market, you can often get a really great bargain.

I took advantage of one of those opportunities not long ago and traded for a well-used Beretta 92 FS that had been used by a police department. The Beretta 92 is a reliable handgun, and these easy tips from our gunsmithing expert can help you make it even better. Like a lot of police handguns, it was carried a lot and fired very little. I could find no indication of extensive use or wear due to firing.

I could have used the Beretta 92 as is, but I wanted to give it a few simple upgrades and make it even more reliable.

None of the upgrades required a lot of work, extensive pistolsmithing, or significant cost. Anyone should be able to handle them. The first thing to look at is the magazine, especially if it's a low-cost, used G. Any used magazine should be completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Brownells offers a shaped nylon brush specifically designed to remove dirt and crud from the inside of the magazine tube.

Most magazines are seldom, if ever, cleaned, and you'll likely be the first to disassemble and clean your pistol's magazine.

Magazines need to be disassembled and cleaned. The spring should be replaced if it's become shortened over time. Note how much the original magazine spring left has compressed with time and use when compared to a new one right.

The Beretta 92 factory magazines, as well as the military-contract magazines, are super easy to disassemble for cleaning and maintenance. Just insert a small punch in the hole in the center of the baseplate, push up on the baseplate retainer, and push the baseplate forward and off the magazine tube.

The retainer is under spring pressure, so don't let it get away! With the baseplate removed, just remove the spring and follower and you'll have free access to the inside of the magazine tube. I encourage you to replace the magazine spring.

Over time and with use, the average wire magazine spring compresses. It actually shortens and loses strength, which can cause feeding malfunctions. It's especially important to replace the original spring in any older military-surplus magazines. While we're talking about springs, the magazine spring isn't the only one that should be replaced. The recoil spring controls the movement of the slide both forward and back as the Beretta 92 is fired and so is subjected to a tremendous amount of stress.

Keep your finger away from the trigger whenever you do not intend to fire. This safety is overcome only by trigger pull. Model G:when the manual safety lever is released after having been activated to lower the hammer, it automatically returns to the ready-to fire position. Models Inox: Anodized grey. Inside chromium- plated barrel.

Models De Luxe:Blued orsilver-plated or gold-plated. Models Inox: Stainless steel, sand-blasted. On request, walnut grips, checkered or antislip rubber grips. De Luxe:Walnut briar grips with gold plate for initials.

Kit, target:Ergonomic walnut grips with antislip finishing. De Luxe are available in three versions: engraved black, engraved silver-plated, engraved gold-plated. All models are equipped with spare magazine, cleaning rod, ABS case.

With your right hand place a cartridge on the follower in front of the lips, press down and slide the cartridge completely back under the lips Fig. Holes on the back or on sides of the magazine allow for visual counting of cartridges Fig. Do not try to force more than the maximum indicated rounds into the magazine.

Add page 7 to Favourites. With the tip of the thumb firmly press down on the cartridge rim and push. As the bullet moves forward, tip it slightly upward with the index finger. The red warning dot can be seen when the manual safety is disengaged. FIRINGThe discharge will recoil the slide which, in turn, will eject the fired cartridge case, cock the hammer and activate the recoil spring.

Then the slide will automatically close, feeding the next cartridge from the magazine into the chamber. NOTE:Since the hammer is uncocked, the pull on the trigger wil first cock the hammer and then release it. Keep you finger away from the trigger whenever you do not intend to fire. NOTE:Since the hammer is cocked, the pull on the trigger simply releases the hammer.

After the first shot the pistol will fire always in the single action mode. The hammer never stays cocked thus following the slide forward to come to rest in the uncocked position. Add page 8 to Favourites. Insert the brush into the barrel from the chamber and scrub the chamber and bore thoroughly. Keep changing the patch until it emerges clean. Lightly oil the locking block. Wipe clean. Drop a few drops of oil around the extractor, firing pin block and safety and finger activate the parts to insure oil penetrations and free movement.

After long use it may be necessary fo first clean with gun oil and the brush supplied. Be sure to oil the disassembling latch, magazine catch, slide stop, trigger system, hammer, sear, and the levers in front of the hammer. After cleaning, wipe with a lightly oil moistened rag.

Target and Competition Conversion Kit models: After having cleaned and lubricated the pistol, if necessary clean and lightly oil the inside of the counterweight sleeve. Caution: slip out of barrel also the barrel - counterweight spacer. Caution: Spring and spring guide are under tension. Therefore, if separation of barrel from slide is required, it is first necessary to separate the counterweight sleeve from the barrel.

It is advisable to carry out this operation when pistol is assembled. Add page 9 to Favourites. Adjustment of rear sight is done aligning front and rear sight on the mark as shown in the ill.
