Basics of Fire Mage Gameplay. As a Mage you are a cloth wearer, meaning you will have very low armor and will take a lot of damage from physical attacks. This talent helps with this problem making it vital for PvP, making you much harder to deal with in PvP combat.
This talent makes Mana Shield more efficient, and efficiency is always good. A must have talent for any Mages that want to PvP. With this talent, your Counterspell becomes incredibly powerful and can be the end of classes that rely on casting. Not very useful in PvE, however. This is a very strong talent. Mana Regeneration is incredibly important, especially in PvE, and being able to regenerate Mana while casting will mean you have a ton more Mana available to cast spells.
This talent is unfortunately pretty useless. It's all about survivability, which means it could be good in PvP, but it's so far down the Arcane tree that it's impossible to get for Frost Mages, and provides no benefit in PvE. A must take talent for any Arcane Mage as it opens up Arcane Power. This talent is very strong as it allows you to instantly cast a spell, which is a huge increase to your burst damage. This is another huge talent for Arcane Mages. Another great PvP talent that is just too far down the Arcane tree to be worth taking.
Reducing damage doesn't help much in PvE and at this point we need to spend all our points on vital talents, so it's another skip. An amazing talent in the Arcane tree. There are very few ways for Mages to raise their Critical Strike Chance, so a talent like this will always be good, it also opens up Arcane Power, which is another huge damage boost - a must have!
This is another important talent for Arcane Mages. It gives a massive increase to spell crit chance when Arcane Concentration procs, meaning you can cast Arcane Blast's for free and they will likely crit. Unfortunately this is another talent that's a pass. This is one of the core Arcane Mage talents. If you're playing an Arcane Mage you must take this. Spell Power is a new talent, but a very simple one. This talent is one that really ties Arcane together, providing a ton of extra spell damage as Arcane stacks up much needed Intellect for extra Mana.
Again, it's another unskippable one. Last but not least comes Slow, the final Arcane talent. It doesn't affect bosses, and is dispellable so wouldn't be great even if Arcane worked in PvP. This is a solid PvE talent. Reducing the casting time of spells always means more damage per second.
This is useful for PvE where you will often cast Fireball , however, you will almost never use it in PvP. Impact is a fairly useless talent in TBC. Not guaranteed stuns are not useful in PvE and there is little room for Fire spells in PvP, where Frost takes priority. One of the most iconic Fire Mage talents.
This is a must pick for any Fire Mage. It is a huge damage boost, giving your enemies a damage over time debuff and playing into the fire Mage fantasy of setting your enemies on fire.
Useful talent in PvE. It gives you a bit more space to play with as you can stand a few more yards away from enemies. This talent is really just used as a filler.
Another very powerful talent. This talent is decent and another one that can be used as a filler. Flamestrike is a decent AoE spell, so buffing it is nice, but it won't have much if any impact on your DPS. Good talent that is a key part of the Fire Mage fantasy.
It is useful in PvE for its massive damage, but should only really be used as a strong opener if the tank is able to keep aggro afterward. This talent is mainly picked for its Threat Reduction. As a Fire Mage, you will be dealing a ton of damage, which cause a lot of Threat. This helps reduce the Threat caused and makes it easier for tanks to keep aggro. Very good talent in PvE. This increases the damage dealt by your Fire spells, which is incredibly useful for boss fights.
In raids, it is likely that one Mage will have the job to always keep this debuff up on bosses so the other Mages are able to maximize their damage. This talent is practically useless. Good talent for PvE. This talent helps Mages with Mana issues, allowing them to spend more time casting rather than trying to regenerate Mana. The first new Fire talent added in TBC.
